KINDERGARTEN

Lesson 1

STRENGTH INFORMATION: Part 1 – Bring out the Cardiovascular Cards and do a circuit using six of the cards. Part 2 – Introduce the strength cards. Discuss how muscles have to work harder than they are used to in order to get stronger. Tell them about how you must exercise your muscles three times per week to get stronger. Introduce each of the seven strength exercises. Teach the class how to do a modified push up only. Have the students try sit ups, but also show them the modified sit up they will eventually use from the Fitness Gram. Part 3 – After you teach them the strength cards have them try the circuit to music. Be sure to save enough time to cool down with some stretching after you work out.

Lesson 2

INTRODUCTION TO HOCKEY EQUIPMENT: Part 1 – Play a game that incorporates strength work. Part 2 – Stick safety. This lesson should be a whole movement, (travel/stop, own space, levels, and directions) where the students move through space while holding their hockey stick. Instruct your students to keep the blade of the stick in contact with the ball any time they are moving around space. If you see students consistently traveling with the stick off the ground, introduce the high stick rule; "If you are traveling with your stick off the ground, that is called high stick. If I catch you, I will you’re your stick and you will have to go into the penalty box for 1 minute." As you walk around the students as they travel, be sure to enforce that rule. This will lay great groundwork for the future when they are playing games. When you say stop, the students should place their stick on the floor. Be sure to keep them moving with a variety of directions. Part 3 – Put on music and allow the students to travel with the stick when the music plays, when the music stops they must freeze and place the stick on the ground. Challenge them by encouraging them to find different ways to travel each time the music plays again.

Lesson 3

HOCKEY DRIBBLING: Part 1 – Play another game that uses strength exercises. Part 2 – Allow the students to move through space while moving a hockey puck. (Puck is easier to control but if you are indoors and would like more control, use a yarn ball.) [AT] "When I say go, begin moving around room space moving the puck around with you, using your hockey stick to move the puck. As you travel try to keep the puck close to you." After your students are traveling safely with the puck, you can also introduce the basics of dribbling as related to hockey. Begin asking very basic questions. In order to see where you are going and also see the other people playing, what should you look at as you are traveling around moving the puck with your hockey stick? (The puck and where you are going.) If you want the puck to stay close to you, how should you hit it? With a hard or soft motion? (Soft) With big strong hits or short taps? (Short Taps) Once your students are able to travel safely while moving the puck you can move onto part three. Part 3 – Play a game with dribbling. There are many games in the book that only work on dribbling. Be sure not to play games that incorporate the other skills of the game since you haven’t introduced them yet.

Lesson 4

DRIBBLING GAMES: Part 1 – Keep following the theme of Strength. Find a warm up game that encourages strength training. Part 2/3 – Play more dribble games. Continue to reinforce the basic concepts of dribbling. Again, remember that you have only introduced the concept of dribble, so all of your games should only use dribbling skills from hockey.

Lesson 5

LARGE PARACHUTE PLAY: Part 1 – Remember the strength theme! Continue to do activities that will help strengthen muscles! Part 2/3 – Introduce your class to the parachute. There are various ways and activities that you can use to begin parachute activities. There is a video that you can watch to see basic activities and get an idea for set up. Any activities that ask the students to move ON the parachute should only be done in the grass or in the gym. DO NOT allow the students to move on top of the parachute while it is on the black top. Also NEVER carry or lift students on the parachute. There is music available with a narrator on the Rhythm and Moves, Movement CD #3. Begin talking about safety and how to handle the parachute. The Parachute Play skills introduce a couple skills per session. You can choose more sessions than 1 if your students are able to work safely and pick the concepts up easily.

Lesson 6

LARGE PARACHUTE PLAY: Part 1 – Remember the strength theme! Continue to do activities that will help strengthen muscles! Are there activities you can use that work on strength with the parachute? Be safe! Part 2/3 – Continue with more parachute activities.

Lesson 7

LARGE PARACHUTE PLAY: Part 1 – Remember the strength theme! Continue to do activities that will help strengthen muscles! Are there activities you can use that work on strength with the parachute? Be safe! Part 2/3 – Continue with more parachute activities.

Lesson 8

LARGE PARACHUTE PLAY: Continue with more parachute activities.
