Lesson 1

SAFETY RULES & GRADING POLICY & TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITY:

Part 1: Introduce the rules and grading policy. 

Part 2 & 3:   Trust & Communication.  Mine Field & Focus Rings These are team-building activities.

 Closure: Debrief the activities and go over expectations.  Set students up for a successful year!

1.6 Demonstrate body management and object manipulation skills needed for successful participation in introductory adventure/outdoor activities.

5.1 Identify appropriate and inappropriate risks involved in adventure, individual, and dual                physical activities.

5.4 Evaluate the effect of encouraging words and phrases to others while  participating in a group physical activity.

Lesson 2

THREE COMPONENTS OF FITNESS:

PREPARATION:  Photocopy worksheet for every student and bring pens or require students to bring pens to class.

Review the three components of fitness.  Cardiovascular, Flexibility, and Strength.

Part 1: Teach concepts of overload, progression and specificity. Set up diverse workout circuit with 2 cards at each station. Students are identifying components of fitness. Stop class several times to take heart rate.

Part 2: Should allow the class to create a routine that lasts at least 10 minutes and includes all the areas of fitness.  The groups should be 4 people each.  By the end of this lesson, each group should be doing their own Routine. 

For the next few lessons, use the routines that each group created for your warm up portion of the lessons.

 

3.4 Plan a weekly personal physical fitness program in collaboration with the teacher.

3.5 Participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity a minimum of 4 days per week.

4.2 Identify physical activities that are effective in improving each of the health-related fitness components.

4.1 Develop a one-week personal physical fitness plan specifying the proper warm-up, cool-down, principles of exercise for each component of health related fitness.

4.3 Match personal preferences in physical activities with each of the five areas of health-related fitness.

4.6 Identify and apply principles of resistance in safe, age-appropriate activities.

4.7 Explain progression, overload, and specificity as principles of exercise.

4.4 Explain the effects of physical activity on heart rate and recovery rates.

5.3 Demonstrate acceptance of differences in gender, physical development, and personal preferences as they affect participation in physical activity.

 

Lesson 3

PACER & TEAM HANDBALL:

Part 1:  Explain that over the next 4 lessons we will be fitness testing, explain grades are not based upon scores, but on effort. Explain the details of the pacer test and that it test CV endurance. Part 2: Teach the class what recovery rate is and how to measure it.

Part 3:  Perform the pacer test in two groups partner 1 and two, first have the partner read their responsibilities. 

Part 4:  Fill in HFZ chart with initial scores, set long term goal for the Pacer and explain how to calculate short term goals for homework.

2.3 Use information, feedback, and practice to set goals for skill improvement.

3.1          Assess muscle strength, muscle endurance, aerobic capacity, flexibility, and            body composition using the State-mandated fitness test.

3.2 Evaluate individual physical fitness measures in relationship to patterns of physical activity.

3.3 Develop individual goals for each of the five areas of fitness based on

       research-based standards.

Lesson 4

PUSH-UPS & DOUBLE DUTCH:

Part 1:  Review homework and short term goals. Introduce push ups as a method for measuring upper body strength and endurance.  Warm-up with routine.

Part 2:  Partner fitness worksheet and push-up test. 

Part 3:  Double dutch ropes

Closure:  Address goal setting for push up. Assign homework of short term goals and to read the handball hand-out.

Lesson 5

CURL – UPS, JUMP SHOTS & TEAM HANDBALL

Part 1: Teaching the jump shot, keeping the practice in an elevated heart rate zone.  Incorporate skill into partner drill of passing, moving and scoring.

Part 2:  Curl-Ups. Teach, practice, create cues, test.

Part 3:  6v6 team handball

SIT & REACH, TRUNK EXTENSION & TEAM HANDBALL:

Part 1: Discuss flexibility and lower back strength.  (What, what, how, test?)

Part 2:  Flexibility and strength circuit with testing stations. 

Part 3: Review goal setting and share goals.

Part 4:  Focus ring team building activity.  Debrief teambuilding activity.

Lesson 7

 FITNESS PLAN, SAQ & TEAM HANDBALL

Part 1:  Discuss the fitness profile and challenge students to improve their fitness.  Part 2:  SAQ (speed agility Quickness) circuit.

Part 3:   Give students the country they are representing and play team handball tournament.

3.4 Plan a weekly personal physical fitness program in collaboration with the teacher.

4.1 Develop a one-week personal physical fitness plan specifying the proper warm-up, cool-down, principles of exercise for each component of health related fitness.
