THIRD GRADE

Lesson 1

REVIEW DRIBBLING, PASSING AND SHOOTING: Part 1 – Warm up with the fitness stations choose three cardiovascular and three strength. When they finish, allow the class to turn the cards around and go through the hockey stations. This will transition into stations for the review portion of the lesson. Part 2/3 – Review the drills listed above. You can use the music from the fitness stations to allow yourself the ability to move from group to group coaching their skills. If you allow the students to stay at each station for two segments they will be able to read the drill and perform it. When the six stations for hockey are over have the class turn the fitness cards around to show the stretch side. Allow your class time to go through the stretch circuit as a cool down.

Lesson 2

PLAY MINI GAME ACTIVITIES USING THE SKILLS TAUGHT UP TO THIS POINT: Part 1 – Warm up with a fitness activity. Part 2/3 – Find a couple games that allow the class to practice the three skills taught so far. Don’t have goalies for these games, since you have not taught that yet.

Lesson 3

DEFENDING A PLAYER WITH THE PUCK: Part 1 – Cooperation. Find an activity that you did not cover in the first unit of fitness & team building. If you do an activity with one partner, you can keep the same partner for the part two activities. Part 2 – Defending a player with the puck. Tackling or stealing the puck is a skill that hasn’t been taught up to this point. Discuss where the defender should position himself or herself in relation to the player with the puck. (Between the puck and the goal.) Discuss where the defender should focus when trying to steal the puck. (Look at the puck) Work on how to steal the ball without making contact with the player who is in control of the puck. Explain the rules that go with contacting another player and review the rules regarding high stick. Part 3 – 1v1 activities. You can play 1v1 with dribbling and shooting. Either let the students make up a game, or find a game that you can teach them.

Lesson 4

DEFENDING A PLAYER WITHOUT THE PUCK: Part 1 – More on cooperation. Part 2 – Defending the player without the puck. Discuss where the defender should position himself or herself in relation to the player. (Between the player and the puck. Always be aware of where the offense player is in regards to the goal.) What should you watch as you are defending a player who is not in control of the puck. (Watch the waist area, they cannot fake with their mid-section of the body.) Part 3 – Find another set of partners and play 2v2 keep away games. Encourage the players to use dribbling and passing. Introduce the rules regarding out of bounds.

Lesson 5

GOAL TENDING: Part 1 – Fitness warm up. Part 2 – Introduce Goal Tending. Describe what constitutes a goal. Where does the goalie place himself or herself in relation to the shooter or player with the puck? (In front of the goal, in front of the goal line, in a ready position in between the line of the puck and the goal, ready to move in any direction.) Tell the class about the rules that pertain to the goalie. Review the rules regarding the goalies box. Part 3 – Allow the students to take turns goal tending and shooting. Play a game of 2 v 2 with one person being the goalie and one person being the player trying to score. Be sure that each partner gets to play goalie.

Lesson 6

FACE OFF (this is the skill that is used to start a game, and start after the half.): Part 1 – Fitness warm up. Part 2 – Face Off. Teach the class how to do a face off, or bully! In a real game both center players hit the puck as soon as the puck hits the ground after the referee drops it. We don’t play with refs, so we use another method. Place the puck on the ground in the center of the court. The two centers face each other and begin with a tap of the stick on the ground, at the same time. Then the two players tap their two stick blades together. Do this three times. After the third tap of the blades, both players may try to hit the puck. After the puck has been contacted, and sent out of the center circle, another player from either team must touch the puck before the centers may play it again. Have the students partner up and practice the face off. Part 3 – Play a mini game 3v3 that uses all the skills taught so far.

Lesson 7

LARGE PARACHUTE PLAY: Part 1 – Fitness Warm up. Do activities that will help strengthen muscles! Use the parachute to work on strength. Part 2/3 – Review parachute basics and safety with your class. There are various ways and activities that you can use to begin parachute activities. There is a video that you can watch to see basic activities and get an idea for set up. Any activities that ask the students to move ON the parachute should only be done in the grass or in the gym. DO NOT allow the students to move on top of the parachute while it is on the black top. Also NEVER carry or lift students on the parachute. There is music available with a narrator on the Rhythm and Moves, Movement CD #3. Begin talking about safety and how to handle the parachute. The Parachute Play skills introduce a couple skills per session. You can review some of the skills that you did with the other grades.

Lesson 8

SMALL PARACHUTE PLAY: Part 1 – Do more strength work. Part 2/3 – Using the small parachutes and place your students in groups of 5 or 6, do some of the activities that can be done with small parachute. This is a wonderful opportunity to do some small group cooperation things. I.E. how many times can your group throw the ball up into the air and catch it, without letting it drop on the ground? Can you play catch, using the parachute with another group? There are many ideas that are still waiting to be found!
